Pick up from your hotel at 08:00 am and after a short stop at Thermopylae (famous for the battle that took place there at 480 bC between 300 Greeks and thousands of Persians), we will visit the statue of king Leonidas and the new museum of Thermopylae with historical briefing about the Battle of Thermopylae through digital applications, later we will arrive at the town of Kalambaka.
There we will continue our tour to Meteora and the breathtaking rock tower of monasteries of the 11th Century, visiting 2 out of the 6 great monasteries that are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This depends of the day of the tour and which monasteries will be open that day. Most famous Monasteries are the ''Megalo Meteoro'', the ''Monastery of Vaarlaam'' and the ''Monastery of Holy Trinity'' where the production of famous film of James Bond ''For your eyes only'' filmed many scenes!!
As we can read at Unesco's official website regarding Meteora ''In a region of almost inaccessible sandstone peaks, monks settled on these 'columns of the sky' from the 11th century onwards. Twenty-four of these monasteries were built, despite incredible difficulties, at the time of the great revival of the eremetic ideal in the 15th century. Their 16th-century frescoes mark a key stage in the development of post-Byzantine painting''.
We take with us as many as we can of these breathtaking pictures of Meteora and we start our trip back to Athens. You can have your lunch at the town of Kalambaka or later at a next stop that you will wish to make. We return to Athens late in the afternoon. (approx. 12-13 hours tour)
